Best Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks Worth Playing I’ve always been impressed by the push of people who make mods and ROM hacks for their favorite games. Nintendo is known for being hard on ROM hacking communities, however they suffer thanks to this love each one of these creators. Coming up with a list of the top 15 Super Mario Rom Hacks was not an easy task. The hacks ranked are from different game consoles and different Mario games. Deciding which hack is better than the other, is not easy. I ranked games based on overall quality, uniqueness and fun factor. There are thousands of hacks out there, so my opinion might not align with yours, especially if you have dipped into rom hacks before. To play any of the following games, you will need a video game system emulator and for some rom hacks, the correct IPS patcher program or original rom. 15. Extra Mario Bros (SMB NES)

A completely redone hack of the original Super Mario Bros. The colors and levels are inspired by Metroid. This game features new levels, power-ups, enemies and bosses. Levels are fun to play through and overall very solid.

I'm trying to put together a list of rom hacks that work on the Everdrive 64 and real N64, with the intention of making them available for download in one (probably quite large!) archive. As you might know, many Super Mario 64 hacks, for example, are emulator-only and can't run on a real N64). Super Mario 64 Rom Super Mario 64: Last Impact is the result of 4,000 hours of work by Kaze Emanuar, and it looks incredible. You may know Kaze from other Mario hacks—he recently also the horrifying mod that replaces every texture in Super Mario 64 with Toad’s face, for example.

Mario and Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest is nothing out of the ordinary, just a solid fun experience. It’s not too hard, so it’s a good one for beginners to play. I liked the variety of levels and how unique they were, considering many of the same assets from Super Mario World can be found here. The beach and toxic factory levels are very neat. Over 74 levels to play xD.

A very unique hack where Mario goes through 100 room levels fighting off all enemies, in order to advance to the next level. Not for everyone, but I personally loved the concept of this one.

12. Super Mario Bros. 2 Deluxe (SMW SNES)

Wow, the original Super Mario Bros 2. running on the Super Mario World engine = Amazing. This is probably the best version of Super Mario Bros 2 ever created. It features amazing 16-bit graphics and color, new level additions and bonus stages. If you love Super Mario Bros 2, you have to give this fan creation a try.

11. Blue Super Mario Bros 3 (SMB3 NES)

Everything in this Mario Game is Blue. Don’t let that distract you though, this hack has amazing levels and fun gameplay. Recommended if you like the core gameplay of Super Mario Bros 3, but just want to play new levels with a sweet blue Skin!

10. Mario In Some Usual Day (SMB3 NES)

Mario In Some Usual day is an amazing hack with all kinds of little tweaks, graphics changes, and mods, like the ability to hold and use multiple power-ups at the same time. Featuring 4 newly created worlds and one secret world. The difficulty is a little harder than SMB3, but not that bad!

9. Yoshi’s Strange Quest (SMW SNES)

Warning!!! Yoshi’s Strange Quest is very hard yet amazing at the same time. Because of the difficulty, I can see some players not liking this one. Super Mario World has been completely redone, with new music, graphics, sounds, 71 levels and of course you can play as Yoshi. Not much great Yoshi games are out there, this is one of them.

8. Super Mario Bros. – The New Worlds (NSMB NDS)

A worthy New Super Mario Bros DS hack that features 80 new levels, new graphics, soundtracks and tweaks to the gameplay. The developer has poured years into this game, and it has shown. Must play if you like New Super Mario Bros.

7. Mario’s Amazing Adventure Revitalized (SMW SNES)

When it comes to level design this is one of the most solid games on the list. Nothing groundbreaking other than the fact the developer knew how to make a fun revision of Super Mario World. One cool thing that I noticed was the different enemies in every world. Overall it just feels like the developer thought this hack through very well.

6. Super Mario: Endless Earth (NSMB NDS)

Actually not finished yet but given how beefy and great this hack already is it’s a must play! The music is amazing, new levels are awesome. The hidden stars are fun to find. The newly themed environments surprised me. Really good and hopefully updates in the future will bring this to mega awesome status eventually.

Great level design and music in Star Road. Really fun to play, but can be difficult in areas compared to the original. Over 121 stars to find. Any Super Mario 64 fan should play this!

4. Mario is Missing! Done Right (SMW SNES)

This is what Mario Is Missing should have been lol. Playing as Luigi and trying to find Mario has never been so much fun. Level design is awesome, along with colors and sprites. This one is not too hard so it’s very approachable for anyone!

3. Mario Adventure (SMB3 NES)

By far the best Super Mario Bros 3 Hack Ever created. This hack has it all, amazing new levels, new abilities, new power-ups, and completely changed graphics. Also, have infinite lives, coins are used to buy new items at toads store. Some even say this is a better hack than any of the original NES Mario games xD.

2. Newer Super Mario Bros (NSMB NWii)

Newer Super Mario Bros is the unofficial squeal to New Super Mario Bros on Wii. With 128 new levels and a remix of new and classic graphics, this one is a must play. Levels you can tell were created for 4 players in mind. A the most impressive NSMB hack on the wii.

1. SM64: Last Impact (SM64 N64)

Get ready to search for 130 new stars in SM64: Impact. With 12 amazing power-ups, that have never been seen before. These power ups are very creative, I was wondering while playing, why Nintendo never thought of these ideas. The new bosses are awesome and the large variety of new levels kept me on my toes the whole time. The top 3 hacks on this list could have all easily been in the number one spot, I just chose this one as my personal favorite above all.
